Backpacking in the Jungle with the SG-237 and SG-2020 PortaPak
Backpacking can be an adventure at any time and in any place, but having to carry around a radio to operate HF in the Central American jungle poses special challenges which resulted in the choice of SGC equipment.
The basic kit is composed of an SG-2020 PortaPak, an SG-237 Smartuner, plus associated cabling and a wire antenna. All of the components can be carried by a single person in a convenient size pack. As you can see, the wiring is kept in plastic bags when not deployed. With plenty of jungle around, finding supports is not a problem.
The basic backpack is setup for quick setup and operation. The SG-2020 Transceiver (PortaPak version with battery case) fits nicely in a standard pack with a rolled up pad next to it into which the rolled up antenna and gear are inserted. The whole kit is completed with an SG-237 Smartuner™ to provide flexibility across the operating range.
Operation is very simple and setup takes only a few minutes to get a wire into a tree and get everything connected. Any convenient spot can be used to create an HF station. Further, the whole thing can be moved to a new location quickly and easily. The rugged SGC gear allows for rough handling in a demanding environment.
